Welcome to the website of Church of the Advent of Christ the King, a parish of the Episcopal Church. We are an Anglo-Catholic church, that is, one with a strong emphasis on worship and the life of prayer. Here, in addition to a warm welcome by a diverse group of people, you will find an atmosphere of quiet reflection on the presence of God, great beauty in the visual aspects of corporate worship, and music that inspires and transforms. Here, through our life of prayer, you will find people committed to bringing the love of God, Incarnate in his Son, into the lives of all. I hope that we can touch your life with that love as you join us in worship of the Creator.

General Announcements

The Rector is away on annual vacation until 14 August. All Church business should go initially to the Church Office 415-431-0454 (Monday through Friday 9:30am to 1:30pm). For pastoral emergencies only please call 415-948-6921.

Sunday taking precedence, the feast of Saint James the Apostle, first of the apostles to be martyred (see Acts 12:2), is transferred to tomorrow. St James is depicted with the pilgrim’s hat and the scallop shell associated with Compostela, Spain, whither his shrine attracted multitudinous pilgrims in the Middle Ages. This transference results in the reduction of the commemoration of SS Anna and Joachim, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, properly 26 July.

Next Sunday, remember one and all to bring some simple edible (e.g., a bag of cookies from the grocery store) or drink to share at coffee hour as we offer fellowship. As we have no designated hosts in the summer, any help setting up or cleaning up would be appreciated.

Our Altar Guild needs you: if able to help prepare the vessels and vestments for Sunday Masses, please contact Anna McHargue (annamchargue@aol.com) for information and training in this invaluable ministry that sustains our worship.

For the revival of the Sceptre, needed are an editor to manage it and also 2-3 people interested in being a part of the Publication Committee to work with the Editor. If interested, please contact Sam Cantin, Senior Warden, by early August.

Mid year statements are coming soon to your mailboxes along with a letter from the Vestry with a mid year Stewardship request because Advent has been operating with a deficit budget each year. The current budget for 2010 has a projected deficit of ca. $10,000. Accordingly, the Senior Warden is drafting a "Deficit Budget Wish List" that will also be issued in a later Orb. Any additional contributions, in any amount, are most welcome in these tough financial times. Please refer any questions to Sam Cantin, Senior Warden, or Jack Jensen, Treasurer.

A call for female choristers: In the absence of Schola Adventus this summer, Paul Ellison would like to establish a women’s chant choir to assist in singing on 8 and 22 August. Any female volunteers who would like to sing in this group should contact Paul soon (music@advent-sf.org) as he plans to hold an audition in late July. It is important to have a basic knowledge of chant notation (square note notation). In order for the group to be viable, we need at least four singers.

Next Sunday's readings will be Ecclesiastes 1:2,12-14,2:18-23; Colossians 3:1-11; Luke 12:13-21.

Reflection Corner

A hortatory prayer to keep faithful in the summertime:

“O Lord,
give us a mind
that is humble, quiet, peaceable,
patient and charitable,
and a taste of your Holy Spirit
in all our thoughts, words, and deeds.
“O Lord,
give us a lively faith, a firm hope,
a fervent charity, a love of you.
“Take from us all lukewarmness in meditation
and all dullness in prayer.
Give us fervor and delight in thinking of you,
your grace, and your tender compassion toward us.
“Give us,
good Lord,
the grace to work for
the things we pray for.”
-- Sir Thomas More, 1478 - 1535
