Welcome to the website of Church of the Advent of Christ the King, a parish of the Episcopal Church. We are an Anglo-Catholic church, that is, one with a strong emphasis on worship and the life of prayer. Here, in addition to a warm welcome by a diverse group of people, you will find an atmosphere of quiet reflection on the presence of God, great beauty in the visual aspects of corporate worship, and music that inspires and transforms. Here, through our life of prayer, you will find people committed to bringing the love of God, Incarnate in his Son, into the lives of all. I hope that we can touch your life with that love as you join us in worship of the Creator.

Volunteer Opportunities

Up-coming opportunity to provide lunch at Canon Kip Community Center: We will be providing lunch on 18 July to the guests at Canon Kip, a mixture of older low income people and street people, who appreciate our food as well as the time we take to show that we care. Assistance will be needed with making and bagging the lunches the day before and then on the date, visiting with the people and distributing the food. A sign-up sheet will be posted in Lathrop Hall as the date approaches.

General Announcements

Flowers at the altar are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of L. Clint Rice on his year’s mind, by Bonnie Barberini and Lewis Brown.

Monday, Independence Day Deacons’ Fare: Join us in feeding our neighbors in need. Volunteers should arrive at 10am to help set up or serve the meal. Contact Christopher Fredricks or Daniel Schwartz for more information (650-344-8615). Donations are also welcome to help offset the cost of feeding our guests (make checks payable to Church of the Advent, earmarked “Lunch Bunch”).

Next Sunday, remember one and all to bring some simple edible (e.g., a bag of cookies from the grocery store) or drink to share at coffee hour as we offer fellowship. As we have no designated hosts in the summer, any help setting up or cleaning up would be appreciated.

Next Sunday taking precedence, the commemoration of St Benedict, Abbot, ca 540, properly 11 July, will be noted only in the collect concluding the Prayers of the People. The spirituality of this father of Western monasticism has animated this parish over the decades.

A call for female choristers: In the absence of Schola Adventus this summer, Paul Ellison would like to establish a women’s chant choir to assist in singing on 8 and 22 August. Any female volunteers who would like to sing in this group should contact Paul soon (music@advent-sf.org) as he plans to hold an audition in late July. It is important to have a basic knowledge of chant notation (square note notation). In order for the group to be viable, we need at least four singers.

Consider sponsoring Fr Jack Fredricks, who will be participating in the AIDS WALK for the 20th time on Sunday, 18 July. He would welcome any donations; no amount is too small. Checks should be made out to AWSF and can be handed to him or sent to him at P.O. Box 296, San Mateo, Calif 94401.

Independence Day was first included in the 1928 Prayer Book. Although propers had been aired in the proposed Prayer Book of 1786, they were omitted in the official Prayer Book of 1789 out of consideration for the clergy who, during the Revolution, had been loyal to the Crown. The collect for the 1928 BCP was composed by Bishop Parsons of California; it has been altered considerably in the 1979 BCP. On this day in 1826, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died within hours of each other, suitably on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Next Sunday's readings will be Deu 30:9-14; Col 1:1-14; Luke 10:25-37.

Reflection Corner

Pray that our nation may remain true to its highest principles:

“Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this
country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the
torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.”
