Welcome to the website of Church of the Advent of Christ the King, a parish of the Episcopal Church. We are an Anglo-Catholic church, that is, one with a strong emphasis on worship and the life of prayer. Here, in addition to a warm welcome by a diverse group of people, you will find an atmosphere of quiet reflection on the presence of God, great beauty in the visual aspects of corporate worship, and music that inspires and transforms. Here, through our life of prayer, you will find people committed to bringing the love of God, Incarnate in his Son, into the lives of all. I hope that we can touch your life with that love as you join us in worship of the Creator.

General Announcements

This morning, we welcome Fr Jeff Donnelly, a former parishioner, as the celebrant and preacher at 11am.

After coffee hour today, the final part of the series, Fundamentals of the Episcopal Church, will focus on inclusion, women, LGBT, and the Anglican Communion, meeting in Lathrop Hall.

On Tuesday, the Rector will complete 30 years in the priesthood. Accordingly, Fr Paul will celebrate the 7:30am Mass to mark this milestone.

Next Sunday, remember one and all to bring some simple edible (e.g., a bag of cookies from the grocery store) or drink to share at coffee hour as we offer fellowship. As we have no designated hosts in the summer, any help setting up or cleaning up would be appreciated.

Music during the Summer Months, from Paul Ellison: Schola Adventus will be on vacation 1 July-5 Sept, with one exception: they will return to sing for the Feast of the Assumption, 15 Aug. In their absence, our volunteer Schola Cantorum will be singing. This group comprises male volunteers who sing regularly at the twice-monthly Latin Mass. I would also like to establish a sister women’s chant choir to assist in singing on Sunday mornings during the summer. I'd like to keep the two groups separate, since I think it is more authentic to do so. So I'm calling on any female volunteers who would like to sing in this group to be in touch with me. It is important to have a basic knowledge of chant notation (square note notation). A workable goal would be for the group to sing on the second and fourth Sundays of August, 8 and 22 Aug. I would plan on holding a rehearsal/audition session prior to that on a date to be arranged in late July. In order for the group to be viable, we need at least four singers. Please let me, Paul Ellison at music@advent-sf.org, know if you would like to be considered for this group.

“Domine, quo vadis?”: One tradition presents St Peter as fleeing the persecution under the emperor Nero, on the Appian Way south from Rome. There he encountered the resurrected Christ heading north into the City. St Peter, astonished, asked Christ, “Lord, whither goest thou?” (“Domine, quo vadis?”) To whom, our Lord responded, “I am going into the City to suffer anew.” At this, St Peter, abashed, turned around and faced martyrdom.

According to tradition, SS Peter and Paul both suffered martyrdom under Nero ca. 64, the former being publicly crucified head downwards (St Peter deeming himself unworthy to be crucified exactly as had been our Lord) and the latter beheaded privately because a Roman citizen outside the City walls along the Via Ostiensis. A major basilica now stands in Rome at the site of the martyrdom of each of these apostles, faithful even unto death.

Josephine Houghton, formerly here at Advent as a summer intern from St Stephen’s House, Oxford, will have been ordained a priest yesterday, 26 June, by the Bishop of Birmingham, England. She will be celebrating her first Mass today, 27 June, at St Andrew’s Church, Handsworth, in that diocese. Pray for Josephine in her new ministry.

Next Sunday's readings will be Next Sunday’s readings will be Isaiah 66:10-14; Galatians 6:7-16; Luke 10:1-11, 16-20.

Reflection Corner

In light of the ministries of SS Peter and Paul, let us pray for the faithful mission of the Church:

“Everliving God, whose will it is that all should come to you through your Son Jesus Christ: Inspire our witness to him, that all may know the power of his forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.”
