After coffee hour today, Part II of a three-week series, Fundamentals of the Episcopal Church, will be held --on what it means to be an Episcopalian, how the church is organized, and what we believe as a faith community. This series is intended for those seeking to join the Episcopal Church from another faith tradition or none, but is also ideal for those seeking to refresh their commitment to the church.
Thursday, the Nativity of St John the Baptist, the forerunner or herald of our Lord, marks mid-summer as the light in the northern hemisphere begins increasing to its culmination with the Nativity of our Lord at Christmas. Accordingly, two Low Masses will be celebrated this day, at 7:30am and at 6:30pm, so all can participate in this key marker.
Next Sunday, Fr Jeff Donnelly, a former parishioner, will be the celebrant and preacher at 11am.
Next Sunday, remember one and all to bring some simple edible (e.g., a bag of cookies from the grocery store) or drink to share at coffee hour as we offer fellowship. As we have no designated hosts in the summer, any help setting up or cleaning up would be appreciated.
Music during the Summer Months, from Paul Ellison: Schola Adventus will be on vacation 1 July-5 Sept, with one exception: they will return to sing for the Feast of the Assumption, 15 Aug. In their absence, our volunteer Schola Cantorum will be singing. This group comprises male volunteers who sing regularly at the twice-monthly Latin Mass. I would also like to establish a sister women’s chant choir to assist in singing on Sunday mornings during the summer. I'd like to keep the two groups separate, since I think it is more authentic to do so. So I'm calling on any female volunteers who would like to sing in this group to be in touch with me. It is important to have a basic knowledge of chant notation (square note notation). A workable goal would be for the group to sing on the second and fourth Sundays of August, 8 and 22 Aug. I would plan on holding a rehearsal/audition session prior to that on a date to be arranged in late July. In order for the group to be viable, we need at least four singers. Please let me, Paul Ellison at music@advent-sf.org, know if you would like to be considered for this group.
Remember: in case of a pastoral emergency only, if unable to reach the Rector, phone 415-948-6921.
Wish List for Building and Grounds funds: Last year’s vestry paid for painting the Pitman room, yet the church did need to spend an additional $1,000 to reinstall the bookshelves and install the new shades in the Pitman and Bowersox Rooms. If willing to help replenish our Building and Grounds fund, please write your check to Advent, noting “Building and Grounds” in the memo line. Any amount would be appreciated.
Next Sunday's readings will be Isaiah 65:1-9; Galatians 3:23-39; Luke 8:26-39.
Remember your Father today, be he among the quick or the dead:
Loving Father, by whose hand we have been guided and cared for since we were young: Bless our fathers, present and absent, whose lives have influenced ours and helped shape us into the children of God we are today, that they too may know your paternal love and grow from hope to glory as your beloved children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
