Welcome to the website of Church of the Advent of Christ the King, a parish of the Episcopal Church. We are an Anglo-Catholic church, that is, one with a strong emphasis on worship and the life of prayer. Here, in addition to a warm welcome by a diverse group of people, you will find an atmosphere of quiet reflection on the presence of God, great beauty in the visual aspects of corporate worship, and music that inspires and transforms. Here, through our life of prayer, you will find people committed to bringing the love of God, Incarnate in his Son, into the lives of all. I hope that we can touch your life with that love as you join us in worship of the Creator.

Volunteer Opportunities

Monday, 31 May, the Memorial Day Deacon’s Fare: Join us in feeding our neighbors in need. Volunteers should arrive at 10am to help set up or serve the meal. Donations are welcome to help offset the cost of feeding nearly 400 guests (make checks payable to Church of the Advent, earmarked “Lunch Bunch”).

Please consider volunteering to preserve Evening Prayer: as of June, officiants are needed for every evening, Mon-Thu. Consider whether you could officiate one evening a week. Advent has had a long tradition of offering the evening office publicly for most of its 150 years largely because dedicated volunteers have come forward to commit to this service. Training will be provided and you will become a part of a tradition of public prayer and praise that has sustained the Church for two thousand years. See Fr Paul or Fr John if interested.

Book Club Notes

Tuesday, at 7pm, Book Club will meet to discuss Waiting for the Bluebirds by June Matthews, Fr Basil’s sister, with Fr Basil as facilitator, following Evening Prayer and a light supper. Sign up in Lathrop Hall to ensure an accurate count for supper.

General Announcements

Today at High Mass, the font will be blessed and we shall renew our Baptismal Promises.

Today, following Coffee Hour after High Mass will be a forum to make further recommendations about partnering with the French American International High School. The Vestry will meet afterwards to prepare for a meeting with the school board on Monday evening.

Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday this week, the Ember Days, pray for all those embarking upon new ministries (see BCP p. 256).

About Thursday’s commemoration: the first Book of Common Prayer was decreed to be in use no later than Whitsunday 1549, so it is now commemorated the first open day after Pentecost. While regretting the ruthless imposition in places of the first Prayer Book by royal fiat and various uncharitable controversies through the ages, we celebrate the tradition of dignified worship initiated.

The next revision of the Parish Directory is scheduled for today, Pentecost (23 May), so please submit forthwith any changes, additions, or deletions to Norman McKnight (philoxenia@earthlink.net), with a copy to office@advent-sf.org.

Corpus Christi will be celebrated Thursday, 3 June, at 6:30pm, with a High Mass and outdoor procession.

Ricardo Avila will be ordained as a deacon on Sat, 5 June, at 2pm, up at Grace Cathedral. All are invited to celebrate this new ministry.

Summer Sunday Coffee Hour: St Benedict’s Guild would like to try something different for our summer Sunday coffee hours by transforming it into a community coffee hour. Please just bring some food or drink, nothing elaborate; or help set up or clean up. Any assistance will be appreciated as we render hospitality together for one another and our guests.
Hopefully, the focus will change from the table to the people in our community – taking time to say hello to those friends you see once a week. Our summertime experiment will start the first Sunday in June.

Support Episcopal Community Services on 4 June at its annual fundraiser, SummerTini. The evening will feature specialty hors d’oeuvres from 20 local restaurants, live jazz, and enticing auction items. All proceeds benefit ECS’s education and employment programs for homeless and low-income adults. Tickets can be purchased at www.summertini.org or by calling (415) 487-3736. Remember that Advent has a long history of supporting ECS through our relationship with the Sanctuary and the Lunch Bunch, a group of shelter residents and parish volunteers who meet every Tuesday for a hot meal, mutual support, and prayer.

Thursday, 27 May, at 7pm, SFPD Chief George Gascon will address select topics concerning the Lower Haight/Hayes Valley/Western Addition neighborhoods, followed by time for questions and concerns (at the Korean American Community Center, 745 Buchanan St, at Grove). Light finger foods will be served at 6:45pm.

Next Sunday's readings will be Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31; Romans 5:1-5; John 16:12-15.

Reflection Corner

Inspired and guided by the Book of Common Prayer in worship, we entreat

“O Almighty God, who pourest out on all who desire it the
spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to thee, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship thee in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
