In conjunction with the Mass this fall there will be a Pot Luck Supper following the Mass in Lathrop Hall, and a program of insightful offerings to help us all better understand and appreciate this Mass.
Here is the plan for 2011-2012:
October 1: “Why Latin” to include the consideration of the Baptism of Clovis by St. Remigius.
November 5: The Chant “Gaudeamus” – development and elaboration of chants – the use of the Litany of the Saints.
December 3: The great “O” Antiphons and the Latin pun the underlies them –
Our guest celebrant on this occasion will be the Very Reverend Jane Shaw, Dean of Grace Cathedral.
January 7: Epiphany Party – the tradition of the King Cake and the connection to “Mardi Gras.”
February 4: The use of Latin poetry in the liturgy. The sequences and other tropes on Latin texts.
March 3: “To veil or not veil” Lenten traditions and the placement of the Altar.
April 4: The Easter Vigil – at 10:30 p.m. The traditional Liturgy to mark the transition from Lent to Easter with the “Exultet” sung in Latin.
May 5: “Ego sum pastor bonus” Latin as a common tongue bringing together divergent traditions, i.e. Taizé and St. Mark’s Seattle.
At 5:00 p.m. on the first Saturday of most months, amid the sweet smell of incense, the ancient and serene tones of Gregorian chant can be heard at Church of the Advent in their original context: a Latin liturgy.
The Latin Eucharist at Church of the Advent provides a contemplative alternative to the more active styles of worship which have been emphasized in the Episcopal Church in recent decades, and also continues a little-known strand in Anglican tradition. In addition to the vernacular Prayer Book adopted by the Anglican Church at the Reformation, the use of Latin continued in various places, especially Oxford University. The Elizabethan Book of Common Prayer appeared in a Latin edition in 1560, and Latin versions of the prayer book continued to be produced up until the nineteenth century.
The service at Church of the Advent provides a truly Anglican via media, with the readings, sermon, and intercessions in English, while all the other prayers and the traditional psalm and scripture verses (the “minor propers”) are sung in Latin by the celebrant and Schola Cantorum. During June, July and August we will take a short break to schedule new hospitality and educational forums for the 2012-2013 year.
The Schola Cantorum, directed by:
Dr Paul Ellison

On some occasions an Anglican Missal Mass is celebrated, and the Latin ordinary and propers are sung by the Schola Femina.
